The Art Department at GCC is dedicated to sharing the vision and voices of our students, alumni, faculty, and staff. We have developed an initiative for the distribution and display of representative artworks throughout the various campus locations.

This initiative has been made possible by the generous support of Mike and Joan Haley (and the resulting creation of the Mike and Joan Haley Collection), the GCC art faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

When complete, the Mike and Joan Haley Collection will consist of artworks created by GCC students, alumni, faculty, and staff. As a collection, this work will reflect the recent history of the Art Department at GCC and is designed to evoke the diversity and shared vision of students and faculty alike and to promote a critical dialog around the nature of art making within our community.

Faculty work is selected during the annual art faculty exhibit; retired faculty and alumni work is selected from on-campus exhibits.

Student/staff work is selected for purchase once a year during the annual Art Student Exhibit, which runs through mid-April to mid-May. All work is selected bythe Art Department full-time faculty. The selection process is based on the following criteria:

    • The work must display a significant level of maturity in the application of a medium to the successful exploration of an artistic goal or ideal.
    • In most cases the work must originate from an advanced level art studio course.
    • The full-time faculty must be in consensus as to the artistic merit of the work.
    • The work must reflect positively on the Art Department and the college.

    For alumni work:

    • The work must display a significant level of maturity in the application of a medium to the successful exploration of an artistic goal or ideal.
    • The work must have been completed subsequent to graduation from GCC.
    • The full-time faculty must be in consensus as to the artistic merit of the work.
    • The work must reflect positively on the Art Department and the college.

    For faculty work:

    • The work must display a significant level of maturity in the application of a medium to the successful exploration of an artistic goal or ideal.
    • The full-time faculty must be in consensus as to the artistic merit of the work.
    • The work must reflect positively on the Art Department and the college.

The monetary value of purchased work is determined by the following criteria:

    • Medium: The cost to the artist of the materials used in the production of the work. The physical dimension of the work will also help determine this cost.
    • Framing costs: If a work has been framed the cost of the frame will be covered.
    • Time: The approximate amount of time that went into the production of the work.
    • The price paid will be less than the asking price if sold professionally.
    • Maturity of the artist within the context of an art-making practice.

The purchase price scale for unframed student artworks is as follows:

    • Digital: $70
    • Drawing: $70
    • Painting: $80-$250
    • Photograph: $70
    • Sculpture: $80-$250

Due to the limited nature of the funds at our disposal, only a select number of purchases may be made each year. Several of our students and alumni elect to loan or donate their work instead. The Art Department and the college are indebted to their generosity and commitment to the arts at GCC.
